Witte took a lot of grief for his time in government, but he was a smart and principled man put in an impossible position by bad events and bad people. This behind-the-scenes memoir is very readable and entertaining, and provides many good lessons in statecraft. Witte rose to a high position on his brains and talent, not his connections, and as a result always had a good grasp of the situation he was in, or at least the least bad grasp he could get.
